Black screen? Video won’t play?

Troubleshooting Bitdefender

If some Vimeo embedded videos play on your Chrome browser while others don’t, especially when using Bitdefender extensions, it’s likely due to a conflict between the Bitdefender security settings and the Vimeo player, potentially blocking specific videos, causing playback issues on certain videos only.
The majority of the videos in these courses are embedded from Vimeo, and the settings on them have been carefully checked.
Here’s why this might happen and how to troubleshoot:
  • Bitdefender filtering:
Bitdefender might be actively blocking videos flagged as potentially unsafe based on its malware detection, leading to some videos not playing while others pass through.
  • Extension settings:

Check your Bitdefender extension settings in Chrome to see if any specific “video protection” or “malware blocking” options are enabled that might be interfering with Vimeo playback. In our experience, the Bitdefender Anti-tracking extension (in Chrome) is a likely culprit.

How to fix:
  • Disable Bitdefender extensions temporarily:

Try disabling all Bitdefender extensions in Chrome and see if the problematic Vimeo videos play. If they do, you need to adjust your Bitdefender settings.

  • Adjust Bitdefender settings:
    • Set an Exception in Bitdefender or Whitelisting Vimeo: Add Vimeo’s domain to Bitdefender’s “safe websites” list to ensure it’s not being blocked unnecessarily.  Also, add at the domain /Speakingresults.com/ and the subdomain /courses.speakingresults.com/
    • Adjust video protection settings: Check the Bitdefender video protection settings and potentially lower the sensitivity to allow more videos to play.
Other troubleshooting steps:
  • Incognito mode:

Try opening the Vimeo video in a Chrome incognito window to see if the issue persists, which can help identify if a browser extension is causing the problem.

  • Update Chrome and Bitdefender:

Make sure you have the latest versions of Chrome and Bitdefender extensions to avoid compatibility issues.

  • Contact Bitdefender support:

If you’re still unable to resolve the issue, contact Bitdefender support for further assistance with their specific settings.
